Definition & Charges for Volunteers

If you are a volunteer then there is no CRB charge for this (there is still an administration charge as the application process is the same). The definition of “volunteer” for the CRB is slightly different to most other definitions. The following information is taken from: The Police Act 1997 (Criminal Records) Regulations 2002

“A volunteer is person who is engaged in any activity which involves spending time, unpaid (except for travelling and other approved out-of-pocket expenses), doing something which aims to benefit someone (individuals or groups) other than or in addition to close relatives”

The following are not classed as volunteers

· Foster carers and other people living in the same home are not classed as volunteers.

· Paid workers in a voluntary or charitable organisation.

The following are classed as volunteers:

· Adoptive parents and those living in the same home are classed as volunteers.

· Unpaid workers who fit into the above definition

If you have paid and unpaid workers, only those who fit into the definition above are eligible for the volunteer rate for Disclosure.

No Membership Fee

Unlike some other Umbrella Bodies we do not charge an annual or quarterly membership fee and will treat application as a separate agreement. This means that there is no “financial penalty” for not submitting a lot of Disclosures and also means that if you find a more convenient Umbrella Body elsewhere, you are free to do so.

The CRB have announced that there will be no increase in fees for CRB Disclosures this year (2009-2010). On the same basis Crossways has again frozen its Admin charges and we hope to maintain these for the foreseeable future.

For Applications completed and countersigned on or after 1st April 2010

*ISA Adult First (formerly called POVAFirst) is a rapid check of the Protection of Vulnerable Adults List and is only available to care workers. A request must be made submitting a completed Disclosure Application and the Application Form must be received by the CRB prior to accessing the ISA Adult First service.
