Culverdale - Crossways' Hostel
Some people with mental health difficulties have a level of independence too high for 24 hour care, yet still need supported accommodation before moving out to the community. Culverdale House opened in 1995, arising from the need for supported accommodation.
Facilities
There are 16 bedsits in the house, all with their own en suite shower/toilet and sink with shared kitchens (up to four people per kitchen) and there are two communal lounges. On the lower ground floor, there are two self-contained one-bedroom flats and a laundry room.
Events at Culverdale
The day at Culverdale is dependant on each resident. They all have a support plan where they outline their goals, and staff work with them to help them achieve those goals. Residents are encouraged to use outside resources, to seek employment, and to take up hobbies or education courses. However, Culverdale staff arrange house events such as BBQs and trips to interesting local places. This encourages socialising among the residents and provides a relaxing change for those who want to take part.
Support work at Culverdale
As a hostel for independent living rather than a care home, Culverdale provides support workers during the week. The amount of and length of time each person receives varies according to individual needs, and is based on a needs assessment created by staff, health professionals and residents.
What do the support workers do?
In general terms, support workers help the residents to become more able to carry out things they struggle with. These may vary between individuals but includes help with shopping, preparing meals, support with household chores such as laundry, filling in forms, or simply having a coffee in town. Even if it's for a few hours a week, residents find that having a dedicated person to see is, in itself, therapeutic. One resident described their support worker as a "lifeline"
